Problem Based Learning 01 - Part 03

Now that you have a good idea of what a good piece of news is like, create one of your own newscast based on the NTU Stabbing incident. By comparing with as many different sources as you can, you are to report from your own perspective on what could have happened ensuring that your reporting is as unbiased as possible.

Requirements:

1. You need to create a less than 10 minute newscast using the equipment in the Pulse Studio only.

2. You will need to include the following portions in your newscast:
a. A brief summary of what happened…
b. Explain the possible reasons why would a student want to stab his professor…
c. A discussion with an “expert” on one of the reasons why a student would want to stab his professor…
d. An interview with student/s on their views on this story…
e. A conclusion on what are the possible steps students should take when they face similar situations.

Please remember that a good newscast needs to satisfy the following requirements:

1. Journalists should have a neutral point of view, not taking a stand on any issues on which there is some disagreement. Instead, journalists are simply to report "both sides" of an issue.
2. It should mean reporting things without bias.
3. They need to be fair and accurate.

A Nanyang technological University professer was stabbed by his final-year project student, who later fell off a bridge linking two buildings on the Bonn Lay campus. Professor Chan Kap Luk, from NTU's School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, was stabbed in the back and arms in his office. After the attack, the 21 year-old Indonesion student was believed to have fallen four floors from the roof of a bridge linking the School of EEE and Techno Plaza. The student was identified as David Hartanto Widjaja. Professor Chan, 45, was rushed to the National University Hospital. He underwent an emergency operation and his injuries was no life-threatening. Professor was believed to be the supervisor of the student final year project.

B)- He might be influenced by his friend in the Virtual World to kill the professor and unknowingly. he stabbed him.
    - He might hate the professor because the professor might be the one who told the board of Directors to drop off his ASEAN Scholarship and David would have to pay for his final year school fees.
    - The professor might be picking on him and David felt very stress out.

  3. What had happened:
David Hartanto Widjaja, 21, a final-year Indonesian undergraduate at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), attacked Associate Professor Chan Kap Luk with a knife before fleeing and taking his own life on 2 March 2009. Both Mr Widjaja and Professor Chan were from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE).

Possible reason of why Mr. Widjaja could have stabbed the professor:
    1) He was angry with Professor Chan for giving him too many projects with too little time, hence causing him to feel stressed.
    2) The professor may have failed him in a module which may have indirectly caused the termination of his Asean Scholarship.
    3) He was not keeping up with the deadlines in his Final Year Project which was supervised by Professor Chan.
    4) He may have felt that Professor Chan was bias against his nationality.
    5) Professor Chan may have accused Mr. Widjaja of being ‘lazy’ for not keeping up with the deadlines.

    @ anabel, jiaying, clarissa, edwin ;

    Conclusion :

Even before the investigations to the David Widjaja tragedy are completed, both NTU and the state media have already reached an unanimous verdict: that David attacked his professor and slashed his own wrists before plunging to his death.

In a desperate attempt to preserve NTU’s battered image, the state media went on a crusade to smear the name of David Widjaja by protraying him as a depressed, wayward and anti-social scholar who somehow lost himself in computer games.

David’s family has rejected the story reported in the Singapore media , saying that the statement was based on the professor’s words only and that the director gave the statement before police completed their investigation. David’s older brother William claimed that the family are “99 per cent sure” that David was murdered.

    Why's :
He could have dropped his ranking in the warcraft, and perhaps the professor had beaten his record. Also, by removing his scholarship, he could have financial problems and his family might be either mad, or want him to be more independant by paying the fees himself. Than, attacking the professor might be cause the professor had been bias, he disliked David and David had stress. And pressure, burden. Thus, he cant cope with his studies and his grade deproved severly.

The following questions need to be addressed urgently:

    1. Were David’s wrists slashed as reported by the mainstream media?

    2. David’s autopsy report revealed that there were 36 wounds to his body. Fourteen of them were knife-inflicted – were they all self inflicted?

    3. Why did the police send David’s autopsy report to NTU instead of directly to the Indonesian Embassy? What is the usual standard practice in such cases?

    4. Did David really jump to his death on his own or is there foul play involved?

    Ending Conclusion :

I think that whenever students face this problems, it is best to get a councellor or talk to someone. Playing too much computer games can cause people to not want to study, and get addicted. Also, stress problems, if students face this problem, they should talk to someone and learn to manage their time wisely. Look at the greenery, listen to some music and thus, you'll feel more relax, keeping things to oneself isn't a good advice. And lastly, problems with he professor, he should not treat David in a bias manner. Than, the professor is in the wrong. David should let the school character development teachers know, so they could help him and not result him in cutting himself, or doing foolish things that can cause his life. It's not worth it. Every life one has, got to be cherished.

  5. A) A brief summary of what happened :
A 21-year-old Indonesian student, David Hartanto Widjaja from Nanyang Technological University (NTU)stabbed his professor, Chan Kap Luk, before jumping a bridge linking two buildings on the Boon Lay campus on Monday morning. The professor was rushed to the nearby National University Hospital as he was fatally injured after being stabbed. While David was dead from jumping off the bridge linking two buildings. The professor was believed to be the supervisor of the student's final year project and there were questions to what had really happened that caused David to stab his professor and then jumped off the bridge linking two buildings.

B)Explain the possible reasons why would a student want to stab his professor :
-Student has mental problems from the stress he was facing.
-Professor gave advice about his project, student took it as an insult got angry and stabbed professor.
    -There were misunderstandings between them.

    E) A conclusion on what are the possible steps students should take when they face similar situations :
We think that students should stay calm and find someone he trust most to talk to him or her about the problems he was facing. Find solutions to solve his problems.

  6. Our group thinks that he was really stressed. There are different types of stress. According to our research, he was a on scholarship and people who recieved the scholarship are expected to perform better than others. He had too much work to handle. He couldn't take it so to destress himself, maybe he started the habit of playing computer games. He became addicted to him and sometimes this can affect a human's mind and there are side effects like getting confused between the real world and the cyber world. Sometimes all they think about is games and they can't cocentrate on anything else. So part of it is a phycological problem.

Another possible reason is he got addicted to computer games(WOW) and his grades started to slip and his scholarship was revoked.

    a. According to Prof. Chan:
He had been preparing some slides when David Hartano Widjaja came in and handed Prof. Chan a thumb drive, saying all his work was in it. Prof. Chan told him he did not have the software to run it.
After Prof. Chan turned around, he allegedly felt "something hitting at his back". According to him, he was being stabbed by David. A struggle ensued, and Prof. Chan managed to escape to the Graduate Programme office, where he was tended to.
He also said that David screamed at him while he was leaving.
David is dead, he does not have a side of the story. However, his family and friends insist that there is more to the story.
    b. Why would a student stab his teacher?
    Perhaps...stress?
There were several reasons for this stress. For one thing, he had lost his ASEAN scholarship. Even though he had said and it has been proven that he comes from a middle class family that can afford to pay his school fees, but he might have been worried about how to break the news to his mother.
He had frequent contact with his mother over the past few weeks before the incident, he never told her about losing his scholarship.
Apart from this, he was also addicted to a game called Destiny Online...which he couldn't play, and had basically lost interest in. He felt that the game's level cap was not high enough for his level and speed of play, as he had reached a high level very quickly.
In addition, he had told his online "wife" that he could not log in, and he might have been frustrated about this new development in a life already in a mess.
His grades were also dropping, his EYP(end year project) was going on very slowly. His EYP was a very big problem for him also. He avoided Prof. Chan at every chance he got, making up excuses to avoid meeting him, not talking to him, and so on. This could also be a factor, especially so because Prof. Chen was the overall teacher-in-charge of the students' end year projects.
    c. I am not very good at holding conversations with myself. Hint hint wink wink.
    d. see above. Will do impromptu on the day we actually need to do this.
    e. When faced with a similar situation, chill. Just...chill. Relax, life is not a deathtrap, don't let stress swallow you, just take it easy, solve your problems one by one, and before you know it, poof. Everything's done, and you can relax, sit back and enjoy life.
David Hartanto allowed the problems in his life to build up, and then the outcome was this. Don't let yourself be like that! Don't put off everything until the last minute(like me, doing this stuff at 1.45 a.m., 5th of March), if not everything will pile up...and well, you'll just be more stressed if anything else.
So...take it easy. Take a chill pill.

  9. We think that the reason for why David killed himself is because he was gaming.

Gaming can cause one person's performance at school or work to suffer. And David's result is already slipping.Gaming has affected him mentally and physically. He may not have enough sleep and so he could not concentrate when he is having lessons.Hence, his results are slipping.David may not have slept well and may not be very self conscious when he stabbed the professor. He may also be having mental disorder as gaming can cause one person to not be able to differentiate the unrealistic world from the realistic world. Therefore,he may be so conscious when he stabbed the professor.

Solutions:He can actually see a doctor and request the doctor to give him some medicine let himself be more control of himself and his actons.
